Gypsy was raised by her mother, Dee Dee. Throughout Gypsy’s childhood, Dee Dee falsely convinced friends, family, and medical professionals that Gypsy suffered from several illnesses, including muscular dystrophy and leukemia.
Dee Dee routinely shaved Gypsy’s head, administered medications she didn’t need, and forced her to use a wheelchair despite Gypsy being able to walk. Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen by Proxy, a condition in which a caretaker or guardian makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make a child look sick.

Dee Dee convinced Gypsy’s father, Rod, that Gypsy was sick as well. However, following Dee Dee’s murder and Gypsy’s arrest in 2015, everyone was made aware of the truth.
Gypsy’s then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, stabbed Dee Dee 17 times after the pair, who met online, plotted her murder together. They then fled to Wisconsin.
Come July 2016, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the stabbing death of her mother. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Nicholas Godejohn was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole plus an additional 25 years for armed criminal action.
